چکیده

The contribution of this paper is to analyse the role of network interdependencies in a dynamic panel data model for German internal migration fl ows since re-unifi cation. So far, a capacious account of spatial patterns in German migration data is still missing in the empirical literature. In the context of this paper, network dependencies are associated with correlations of migration fl ows strictly attributable to proximate fl ows in geographic space. Using the neoclassical migration model, we start from its aspatial specifi cation and show by means of residual testing that network dependency eff ects are highly present. We then construct spatial weighting matrices for our system of interregional fl ow data and apply spatial regression techniques to properly handle the underlying space-time interrelations. Besides spatial extensions to the Blundell-Bond (1998) system GMM estimator in form of the commonly known spatial lag and unconstrained spatial Durbin model, we also apply system GMM to spatially fi ltered variables. Finally, combining both approaches to a mixed spatial fi lteringregression specifi cation shows a remarkably good performance in terms of capturing spatial dependence in our migration equation and at the same time qualify the model to pass essential IV diagnostic tests. The basic message for future research is that space-time dynamics is highly relevant for modelling German internal migration fl ows. JEL Classifi cation: R23, C31, C33

Changes in social inequality with respect to health-related living conditions of 6-year-old children in East Germany after re-unification

BACKGROUND Since Germany re-unified in 1990, substantial social and economic changes have happened in East Germany, the former socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of these socio-economic changes in East Germany on the association between social status, measured by parental educational level, and health-related living conditions of c...

Interregional Migration in Germany: Characteristics and Effects for Regions and Migrants

German unification and the subsequent breakdown of economic activity in East Germany initiated enormous migration flows from East to West Germany. People from East Germany moved towards West Germany, where wages are higher and employment opportunities are more favourable. Our paper takes a somewhat broader perspective; it analyses migration flows between four macro regions, i.e. East, North, So...

Chaotic Analysis and Prediction of River Flows

Analyses and investigations on river flow behavior are major issues in design, operation and studies related to water engineering. Thus, recently the application of chaos theory and new techniques, such as chaos theory, has been considered in hydrology and water resources due to relevant innovations and ability. This paper compares the performance of chaos theory with Anfis model and discusses ...

Determinants of East-West-migration in Germany: A macroeconometric analysis

A main feature characterising the transition process of eastern Germany is the scope with which East-West migration took place before, during, and after the German reunification. Overall, 4 million individuals left East Germany to migrate to the west between 1989 and 2007 (gross migration). Taking into account West-East migration, cumulative net migration amounted to 1.7 million persons. This r...
